The following are interviews and articles that I’ve written for popular media, some of which are in translation. You might also read the Reiki Backgrounder published by the NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), for which I was the lead reviewer. These articles describe the use of Reiki in various medical settings and address issues relevant to integrating Reiki into conventional health care, such as research.

Reiki in Hospitals – introduces Reiki and medicine, and describes HIV Reiki programs in New York City hospitals.

Reiki in Portsmouth Regional Hospital – started in 1995, this Reiki program has provided over 8000 treatments.

Reiki at the NIH’s Clinical Center – Reiki is used by the Pain and Palliative Care Service to relieve pain and suffering of patients enrolled in clinical research trials.

Emergency Reiki: professionals use Reiki in emergency and acute care settings.

Outpatient Reiki - A non-medical professional collaborates to offer Reiki to patients in conventional health care settings.

MY FAVORITE BOOKS

Besides asking my students to read my book, REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide, I suggest they read Helen Haberly’s REIKI: Hawayo Takata’s Story. Helen learned to practice Reiki from Hawayo Takata, who brought the practice to the US from Japan with her Reiki master, Chujiro Hayashi, in 1938. The first part of this small gem of a book relates the story of Reiki as Takata shared it, which we now understand was a teaching story designed to carry the values of Reiki rather than historical fact. The second part is irreplaceable in Reiki literature, a series of anecdotes of Reiki healings which Takata shared with her students. The people to whom Takata brought Reiki practice did not have access to the type of health care that is commonly available in the US today. Much of their health care was inextricably interwoven with lifestyle and home, and Reiki fit the bill. I reread these anecdotes frequently as a reminder of Takata’s dedication and of what is possible.
