Daily Self Reiki Practice Revisited

In 2002, Sandy Priester co-founded LifeSpark Cancer Resources, a Denver non-profit that connects people addressing cancer to qualified Reiki and Healing Touch practitioners. Each year, more than 60 Reiki practitioners offer an average of 10 Reiki sessions to 120 clients.

“No, not every day.” That’s what I said when Pamela Miles asked me if I practiced self Reiki every day.

That was more than 10 years ago, but I remember the conversation clearly. She was writing an academic paper on Reiki practice for a peer-reviewed medical journal, and was gathering information about our Reiki program in Colorado. She said her daily self-practice kept her calm and centered, and encouraged me to try it.

So the next week I gave it a try. I practiced self Reiki before a stressful meeting, but my mind was too busy to notice any change. I practiced again a few days later before work, but I was too impatient to sit still.

That night I got in bed and placed my hands on my belly. I was soon asleep. The next night, I placed hands on my belly again and was asleep before I could move to the next placement.

“Ok, this is good,” I thought. “But what about the benefits of a FULL session?”

One morning, I lingered in bed, not wanting to get up. “I love lying here,” I thought. “Hmmm. What if I gave myself Reiki right now. Then I’d have an excuse to not get up.” I practiced for the next 20 minutes, and got out of bed feeling relaxed and pampered.

“Wow, I really like this! What if I could do this every day?” I realized I could, and that was the beginning of my daily self-Reiki practice.

As LifeSpark co-founder and non-profit executive, I manage multiple projects, recruit and work with donors and volunteers, and organize large events. It’s exciting, challenging, and yes, stressful!

Before I get out of bed every morning, I practice self Reiki, sinking into sense of peace and calm that is so healing. If I am feeling pain, injury, or stress, I stay longer.

We recently produced a large event that required more of me than I thought I had to give. It involved 14 weeks of long hours filled with challenging tasks, and tough choices about how to allocate my time.

Many things in my life were left undone during those 3.5 months, but I never gave up my Reiki self practice. In fact, I increased it to an hour every morning. My self practice was central to my ability to remain positive, balanced, and focused.

Last year I finally met Pamela in person when she visited Denver. Once again the topic of daily self-practice came up, as I suspect it does regularly. This time I said, “Yes, I practice self Reiki every day.”

I would not have it any other way.

  1. At the beginning I disregarded this aspect of Reiki. However for the last couple of months I have started practicing self Reiki. I really can see the benefit after doing some heavy work, usually I will be sore the next day but after a mini session before bedtime I am up and about all energized. My challenge is to incorporate self Reiki on a daily basis.

  2. I have got into the habit of practising self reiki every morning before I get out of bed and every night before I go to sleep. It is amazing as when I practise in the morning it helps me feel energized and ready for the day and yet at night it helps me feel calm and relaxed and ready for sleep! Lovely article, thank you.

    1. Thank you, Amanda, for describing the benefits of Reiki practice at either end of the day. If we remember that Reiki practice is balancing, we understand that it can always be helpful, even if it’s not all that is needed.

  3. this reminded me to think about reiki not only in the morning to prepare me for the day but also at night to help me cope with all that has happened in the day and relax me for sleep. Thank you. Namaste

  4. Love doing self reiki, being alone in my own space for a quiet time is wonderful and the benefits are so rewarding, we have a group here Radiant Reiki, we also practice weekly on each other and offer free Reiki sessions to the public, this is because of someone’s love of reiki and keeping the cost so people can afford it, there is a free will offering of food and supplies for the homeless.
