Reiki Is Boring

How do I know Reiki is boring?

Every morning since 1986, I’ve placed my hands for Reiki self practice and let my awareness settle into the experience. The practice doesn’t grab my attention like a Law & Order rerun, a close Yankees game or a World Cup match.

It’s quiet. It’s familiar. Occasionally — rarely — a subtle experience feels not-so-subtle, but even when Reiki practice rocks my world, it doesn’t shake the bed. No, Reiki practice rocks my world from within. If I want to notice, I need to drop within.

At any time, but especially these days, with so many rocks flying on the outside, dropping within is an added blessing, a time of retreat while my mind delights in subtle sensations, or savors the boredom.

It doesn’t really matter to me what my mind is doing. I’m practicing Reiki and that’s heaven on earth.

Diving in when Reiki is boring

Do you savor your Reiki self practice? Or do you check it off the list, or (gulp) power through it?

Even powering through practice is beneficial, and ever-so-much better for you than skipping practice.

You could adjust your expectations and enjoy your practice for what it is, instead of thinking it should be different, more dramatic. Isn’t life on earth dramatic enough right now?

If you’re not enjoying your Reiki self practice, take a look at why not.

Is your mind restless? Give it time to settle.

Are you impatient? Give yourself time to settle.

Whatever the obstacle is, try giving your practice time and gentle attention. First take the time to make your body comfortable, then give your mind the time it needs to get comfortable.

Why practice boring Reiki?

Remember why you practice Reiki. Unlike sports or music or other skills, you don’t practice to get better at Reiki.

You practice to get better at being

Yourself. Alive. Happy. Kind.

Reiki is boring, and that’s a good thing. Don’t you already have enough drama in your life? Reiki helps you stop thinking and refresh your mind.

  1. I love this article. When the opportunity surfaced to offer Reiki sessions more widely to others I went through a spell of thinking I needed to add more to my practice. I then realised that this was about me and my own mind becoming restless – worry creeping in about others’ expectations and if what I was offering was enough. After stepping outside of my immediate circle for the first time to offer a treatment to a colleague and hearing their feedback I know simple and ‘boring ‘ is more than enough.

  2. Fantastic article Pamela 🙂

I’ve found that after a while, you start relishing in that boredom until it becomes excitement!

  3. Thank you so much for this reminder that our Reiki practice will always offer us what we need, even when we think we want something else. I always tell my students that I practice self-Reiki daily not so much because of how I feel during that time, but how I know I would feel if I *didn’t* make it a daily priority.

Just because what we experience during a Reiki session or self-Reiki practice feels subtle does not mean it isn’t initiating deep change. I realized sometime last year while doing something rather ordinary (I think I was sweeping the kitchen floor) that the self-critical chatter so often lurking at the edge of my awareness had been very quiet for a while. This was a big revelation for me and I felt tremendous gratitude to Reiki and to my daily practice for facilitating that level of healing. It didn’t happen overnight; I’ve been practicing Reiki over 11 years now. But if that’s “boring”, I’ll take boring every day if it brings me to that level of inner peace.

  4. You are such an inspiration Pamela at all levels. I have been practicing self-Reiki for many months right after finding your website. I took Reiki I and Reiki II in 2008-2009 for personal gain and never realized how important it is to practice daily Self-Reiki until you explain it. Practice it in the morning first thing in bed while giving thanks. A wonderful experience. Also at night, before going to sleep and usually, go to sleep before finishing. Thank you so much for sharing your vast knowledge and wisdom.

  5. I went through a time where I stopped practicing because I stopped feeling these amazing shifts. It was like I needed these strong validations that Reiki was “working” But now I find myself in a place where I enjoy the subtlety of my practice. It’s fun to place my hands on myself and let the energy flow and be OK with that. Communing with that feeling of being in a receptive mode, in an ease mode, where I don’t have to do something or have something happen. It’s liberating really.
