I’m not being grandiose. The good we can bring to our world — our capacity to heal the world we live in — starts with our self-care.

I know you can do this. Even if you have given up at other times, I am confident you can actually practice self Reiki every day, and start a new life founded on self-love and self-care, to help yourself and others at the same time.

Unless you ask for help, we won’t address how you practice – that’s totally up to you! The focus here is simply to get your Reiki hands on yourself every day to practice is the way that is meaningful to you.

Just starting your self Reiki practice?

If you are just starting your hands-on self-practice, you might need a little support to get started. Here are my favorite tips:

  • Schedule it in. Make the decision when to practice once and then do it. That way, the obligation doesn’t weigh on you all day.
  • Choose the easiest time in your day, the time when you are most likely to practice consistently. The best time to practice is the time when you actually will practice. For many people, that is while they are in bed at the beginning or end of the day, but your schedule might be different. I self-practice before I get out of bed in the morning, usually before I even open my eyes.
  • Use a protocol. When you practice the same way every day, your hands develop a Reiki habit that takes the thinking out of your practice. If you don’t have a protocol, you can try the simple eight-placement one I use. If you have limited mobility in either arm, modify according to what you can do. Don’t have time for a full treatment today? Take a few minutes to practice as you can – perhaps head, chest, abdomen – and return to full treatment tomorrow.
  • Place your hands. Or even one hand. Every day, no matter what. Don’t let perfect get in the way of good. Do what you can today. Practicing every day is more important than how long you practice. Your system responds to habits and rhythm.

  1. What a blessing to be able to do this practice, Pamela! I started several months ago, and have done the eight positions every day since, plus the Tuesday noon (PDT) class. I do the practice right after my morning meditation. I feel grounded and safe with the practices. Thank you.

  2. I just have joined the 30-day Daily Self Reiki Challenge. Since my attunement October 2017 I have done self-treatment almost every day. I do it some time during the day or in the evening. I tried to do it also when in bed but it somehow felt a bit clumsy. Perhaps, I didn’t choose the right hand positions then. You, Pamela, wrote in this short introduction that you do it first thing in the morning while still in bed and use 8 simple hand positions. I would appreciate if you could advice me which ones. Thank you very much.

    1. Mara, please don’t think of right or wrong hand placements. There are different approaches and you need to choose what is doable for you.

  3. I practice self Reiki everyday and have helped several others. I was told average time in each position is 3-5 mins. I want to give a useful session so I find myself being a clock watcher to make sure I am in position long enough. Is there a way I can train myself or know when I have given an effective treatment to an area? I do not want to be so dependent on watching the clock.
    It takes my focus off Reiki watching the clock so intently.

    1. When we offer a treatment to someone else, we usually need to be somewhat aware of time, but when we self practice, we generally don’t have that concern. I encourage my students to set an alarm if they need to finish by a certain time, so they can enjoy their self practice and not watch the clock so intently. You might notice the time when you start practicing; let yourself enjoy the subjective, often meditative experience of your practice; and then check the clock again at the end. If it’s been much shorter than you intended, next time you’ll be more leisurely. You will likely find that some sessions are longer than you expected, but as long as you aren’t missing an appointment, that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

  4. Pamela, yours was one of the first books I read when embarking on my Reiki path years ago. A two-time cancer survivor, self-Reiki played an integral part in my 2012 cancer experience, not only for my own benefit but also touching my health care team. One nurse even remarked there was something “special” about me, that I always had a sort of “glow,” as she described it. I then explained about Reiki. At any rate, it has been quite a journey and affirms my preference for teaching Reiki over simply providing treatment. I have found Reiki to be quite self-empowering not only for myself, but also for students. I also firmly believe . . . no, I know . . . that living with Reiki as part of my being shortened my recovery time from surgery and caused my surgeon on a couple of of occasions to shake his head a bit, look pleased but perplexed and say to me, “You’re doing remarkably well , considering.” While under his care, he also said, “Whatever you’re doing, keep on doing it.” Cool, yes? Peace, all.

    It’s not a panacea – it’s a small shift but bluntly those have the biggest impact and this has been such an amazing reminder in the simplicity of daily practice for me.

  6. I Loved receiving the daily emails to encourage the daily self Reiki.
    I participated each day. This is what I needed as I had not been very faithful to myself in doing self Reiki. I have done it each night at bedtime. What fabulous sleep each night as a result. Now that I am in the habit I am confident I will continue to be faithful in caring for myself with Reiki. You must care for yourself before you can truly care for others.

  8. I particularly like yesterday’s “Sprinkle your day with refreshing Reiki moments. Now is always a good time for self Reiki.” I often find moments to use reiki, on the train, watching TV… but it’s a good reminder that if you can do it safely (i.e. not driving) why not?

  10. Ms Miles thank you for prompting me with the 30 day Reiki Challenge. I am reminded to put me first and start my day with a self care treatment before arising from my bed. In the evening if I am tired I will perform another session starting on my crown for about a half hour. This usually gives me a quick burst of energy that allows me to finish projects before retiring. I have never slept so deep since practicing Reiki on myself. Thank you for your support.

  13. Thank you so much for he daily reminders. I even got a friend to sign up for the 30 day challenge who hasn’t been practicing for a while. I am new to Reiki and will be taking level ll this weekend. I realize how important self reiki is for me in order to get better but it also helps me relax and feel good that I’m doing something wonderful for myself.

  14. Thank you for prompting this 30 day reiki challenge. I usually practice self reiki every day, most often before I go to sleep, but I have been changing my routine with the onset of this challenge and have been practicing in the morning before I get our of bed. It’s been an invigorating way to start the day!

    I remember about three years ago I was going through the beginning of my separation from my ex husband and had initiated a rule that I would not get out of bed until my feet were dancing and I was smiling. (At the time I was listening to a great short song by Pearl and the Beard called Reverend – whose tag line was “How do I get there on these old feet? Wandering aimless or so it seems” and then has a repeating chorus about being a blessed man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Iy2w-bW90 ) It was about perseverance and calling on your inner strength.

    And I can say that reiki has certainly been my tool for tapping into, remembering and using my own strength and love. I feel so happy to have found this inner practice and thank you for initiating opportunities to connect with people who are also practicing. It makes me smile to imagine all the other people who may be laying there taking time to love themselves at the same time I am!

I have found that in my practice of self Reiki it permeates my day or rather helps clear my mind and let’s me be true to myself . It keeps me balanced and centered. I combine my self Reiki with the 5 Reiki principles together they empower me so I can accept the daily challenges with ease and less dis- ease.   15. As a holistic nurse, I know one of the major tenets of holistic nursing is self-care. Yet, like many nurses I tend to focus on others before myself. I absolutely love how Pamela talked about keeping appointments & it really made a Shift within me. Would I be happy if someone repeatedly made appointments with me, then cancelled? Would I feel that person senses value in me? How would one of my patients/clients feel if I did the same to them?

    I chatted with a colleague today who mentioned no longer knowing who she is because she gives so much to everyone else. I can empathize; been there, done that, wrote a song about it. This challenge has opened my eyes to something I already knew, but had long forgotten: If I don’t value myself, how can others?

    When we were taught Reiki, we were told not to give it ever at the crown or the navel as the energy there is too intense. Have always had a strong desire to give Self reiki to the navel though for the last few weeks. It was a great relief to find both these points in your daily 8 areas, would be grateful for your rationale behind it ? thx!

    1. That’s how I was taught to practice, and I particularly enjoy those placements. Reiki practice is balancing.

  20. I was attuned several months ago. I didn’t feel like I got much out of it besides thumped on the head. I have not been practicing. Am I still good to go?

    1. I’m sorry your training wasn’t a satisfying experience, Cindy. I don’t know what I can say about the thumping on the head. That’s one I’ve never heard of.

      What I can say is anyone who has been trained and received the First degree initiations can self-practice at any time. Why not give it a try?
