Mayan Era Change

I spent two weeks in Guatemala attending Mayan ceremonies in Chichicastengo, Tikal, and Lake Atitlan to celebrate the change of the era, as articulated in the Mayan Calendar (misrepresented in our culture as a prediction of the end of the world).

It was a profoundly moving experience. In Chichicastenango, we were a fortunate handful of foreigners (including the ambassadors from the European Union, the Netherlands and Korea to Guatemala) in crowds of Maya and some Guatemalan dignitaries who had traveled to hear the address given by Don Tomás, the head of Guatemala’s Quiché Maya. I share it with you here in English and Spanish.*

At 2:02 PM on December 21, 2012 at Chichicastenango, Guatemala, with the sun directly overhead, Don Tomás said:

I want to thank you all. I am happy because my people are here with me.

I tell you that you are my grandchildren, because I am the grandson of my grandparents and ancestors. As the highest leader of the Mayan people in Guatemala, I want to thank you for your presence here.

How do you feel? Do you feel happy?

We are all living this change of era, and therefore I ask your applause, your sign that you are happy.

The road ahead can be traveled, but we must travel hand in hand with obedience. We have to respect our elders, as we must respect our authorities.

This is how we need to set an example for the future generations — the example of the obedience with which we follow the grandparents and the ancestors, and the obedience that we must have ourselves.

This new era will be full of goodness and happiness, but it depends on us to leave the hatreds, revenges, intrigues, jealousies, quarrels and together form a better people, a better region.

And then, in this way, if we change our hearts, our children and our grandchildren will also change their hearts. Because each one of you is an example for your family, as well as we and the authorities are examples to our society.

This is my message. What can we do to let go of the bad things we carry? We cast them in the sacred fire to be burned, and in the new era, let us be different human beings.

And for this reason, my message to the inhabitants of Chichicastenango refers also to the entire country. Realize  what we are doing here is giving thanks to the creator of the world.

We should not be afraid, because this is not a fatal date. All that is happening is a change of the era, which has to go through the change in each one of us, in our hearts. Tomorrow (December 22, 2012) we receive and begin the new era. We are making the change now. Let us be better human beings.

The same message goes to everyone. Once again let’s open our hearts, be examples for our families, let go of all the bad things we have, and be better citizens. And so, we will form a better society and country, and that goes hand in hand with each of us being responsible for our families.

And so to the citizens of the world, I tell them that the bases have to be maintained, as written by the Maya civilization, of which today we are the grandchildren, in their sacred text, the Popol Vuh, now located in Chicago, in the message which they have left us in the calendar that they, our grandparents and our ancestors, wrote.

Today we are still worthy of doing tribute in honor of our grandparents and our ancestors, and in honor of the Mayan people who live today.

The journey has not been easy, but the journey is not long if one is obedient. Just as I respect my parents and my grandparents, I also ask you, boys and girls, young people, to respect your parents. Respect your authorities and you’ll have a better life.

Because everything happens with obedience, the same way as we are obedient and we are grateful to the creator of the world. This is how people can form a better society.

Then you realize, here are our spiritual guides, who are taking care of the ceremony, they are expressing gratitude for us. I am personally presiding here, not only for us, but for the people of Chichicastenango, for the people of Guatemala, and for all Humanity.

My final message is that we all make an effort — as I have said before and as I have said in many places — shoulder to shoulder, toe to toe, with bare feet, facing the Sun. Thank you for coming!

Mensaje al respecto del cambio de Era

Quiero agradecerles a todos Ustedes. Estoy contento porque mi pueblo está conmigo. Yo les digo que son mis nietos, por que yo también soy nieto de los abuelos y de los ancestros. Como máximo líder de este pueblo y de la región y el país, quiero agradecerles su presencia acá.

Como se sienten? Se sienten contentos? Estamos viviendo todos el cambio de Era y por esto necesito su aplauso, su manifestación de que están contentos.

El camino que tenemos por delante se puede hacer, pero tiene que ir de mano a la obediencia. Que respetemos a nuestros mayores, así debemos respetar a nuestras autoridades.

Y entones, de esta manera, es como tenemos que poner el ejemplo a las futuras generaciones de la obediencia que estamos teniendo con los abuelos y los ancestros, y de la obediencia que debemos de tener nosotros. Que esta nueva época va a ser llena de bondad y de bonor, pero esto depende de nosotros, que dejemos los odios, los rencores, las intrigas, las envidias, las pugnas y que juntos formemos un pueblo mejor, una región mejor.

Y entonces, de esta manera, si nosotros cambiamos nuestro corazón, nuestros hijos, nuestros nietos también lo van a cambiar. Por que cada uno de Ustedes son ejemplos para su familia, así como nosotros y las autoridades somos ejemplos de la sociedad. Este es mi mensaje. Que pasa para que dejemos las cosas malas? Las echamos en el fuego sagrado, para que se consuman y en la nueva Era seamos seres humanos diferentes.

Y por esto también, mi mensaje a todos los habitantes a Chichicastenango, se refiere al país entero. Que si se dan cuenta, estamos haciendo un agradecimiento acá al fundador del mundo. Que no tenemos que tener miedo, que no es una fecha fatalica, si no que el único que esta pasando es un cambio de Era, que tiene que pasar por el cambio de cada uno de nosotros, en nuestro corazón. El día de mañana cuando recibamos y empecemos la nueva Era, estamos haciendo el cambio hoy, seamos seres humanos mejores.

Entonces el mismo mensaje para todos. Que nuevamente abramos nuestro corazón, que seamos ejemplos para nuestras familias, que dejemos todo lo malo que tenemos, que tratemos de ser ciudadanos mejores. Y así formaremos una sociedad y un país mejor, pero que va de la mano de nosotros que seamos responsables cada uno de nuestras familias.

Y por esto a los ciudadanos del mundo, les cuento que se siguen manteniendo las bases, así como lo dejo escrito la civilización Maya, que nosotros hoy somos nietos, en el Popol Vuh que se encuentra en Chicago. En este mensaje, que nos han dejado, en este calendario, que ellos escribieron, nuestros abuelos y nuestros ancestros, y que hoy nosotros estamos siendo dignos de hacer un homenaje en honor de ellos y en honor de este pueblo Maya que hoy por hoy vive.

Y este caminar no ha sido fácil, pero este caminar no es largo si uno es obediente. Así como yo respete a mis papas a y mis abuelos, así Los incito a Ustedes, que también niños y niñas, jóvenes respeten a sus papas, respeten a sus autoridades y tendremos una vida mejor. Por que todo pasa por la obediencia, así como nosotros somos obedientes y estamos agradeciendo al fundador del mundo. De esta manera es como el pueblo puede formar una sociedad mejor.

Entonces se dan cuenta, aquí tenemos nuestros guías espirituales, que se están encargando de la ceremonia, que están agradeciendo por nosotros y que yo personalmente estoy presidiendo acá. No solo para nosotros, si no para los habitantes de Chichicastenango, para los habitantes de Guatemala, y para la humanidad entera.

Entonces mi mensaje final es que todos damos nuestro esfuerzo, como lo he dicho antes, y como o dije en muchos lados, hombro con hombro, pie con pie, con pies descalzos, pero con cara al Sol. Muchas gracias por haber venido!
