On July 1, 2009, The New York Times reports that American nuns are under Vatican scrutiny, facing two sweeping investigations.
According to the Times’ article, American Cardinal Levada, head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, said an investigation by his group was warranted because the Leadership Conference of Women Religious had not been responsive to its warning eight years ago that the nuns “had failed to ‘promote’ the church’s teachings on three issues: the male-only priesthood, homosexuality and the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church as the means to salvation.”
The Times article goes on to mention the recent anti-Reiki statement by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine. Interesting that Cardinal Levada is also American.
Was Reiki the last straw?
According to the Times, it would appear so. The Times cites Kenneth Briggs, the author of Double-Crossed: Uncovering the Catholic Church’s Betrayal of American Nuns, as saying nuns practicing Reiki and running reform groups may have tipped the scales against them in the eyes of the male-dominated Catholic hierarchy.
The plot, it thickens.
Sisters, how can the Reiki community help you?
Sadly, they may be too afraid to comment.
